Hemkund Sahib is an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Sikhs and is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Sikh.  The sacred Sikh Gurudwara lies in the heart of the region on the banks of Hemkund in Chamoli, in Uttarakhand. It is situated amidst the 7 snow cap crest and splendid hoary glaciers.

According to the Hindu mythology, it is referred to the place where Pandu king had practiced Yoga and meditation. It is also referred to the place where lord ram brother Lakshman had meditated here in Hemkunt after the severe harm he received from Meghnath during Ramayana war. There is a small Lakshman temple near the Gurudwara.

In’ Bachitra Natak’, in the autobiography of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, it is mentioned that he was ordered by God to take bath at the mount of Hemkunt when he was meditating. It is said that Guru Govind Singh had mediated on the banks of Hemkund in his previous birth. Guru Govind Singh is the spiritual leader who instituted the entire present distinctiveness of Sikhism.

The first Gurdwara was constructed in 1935. The larger and present Gurdwara was constructed by General Harkirat Singh.

How to reach


Delhi – Rishikesh – Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Gopeshwar – Joshimath – Govindghat – Ghangaria -Hemkund Sahib

BY AIR:

The nearest airport to Hemkund Sahib is Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun, which is 310 kms away. you’ll take a cab or bus from here up till Govindghat from where the motorable road ends and therefore the trek to Hemkund Sahib starts.

BY TRAIN:

The closest railroad station from Hemkund Sahib is at Rishikesh. From here, one can avail buses or cab facility to succeed in Govindghat from where the trek starts.

BY ROAD:

You can take buses from ISBT or take private buses up till Joshimath. From Joshimath, you’ll take cabs or taxis to succeed in Govindghat, where the motorable road ends. The trek to Hemkund Sahib starts from here.

It is a 10km trek which might take around 5-6 hours ranging from Govind Ghat. you’ll also take the helicopter service from Govind ghat to Hemkund Sahib which might cost around 3000rs per person.

You can also take a pony service from Pulna or Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and back which might cost around 1200-1600 Rs. for a trip .

The trail is steepy but is extremely beautiful. There are variety of small Food stores along the way for passersby to take a seat and eat.
There are various hotels at Govindghat for the stay. there’s also a Cloak Room where you’ll leave behind your luggage while trekking. there’s also a Gurdwara at Govindghat which provides accommodation at reasonable rates.

The complex shuts down by 3 pm. Ardas is held at 10.30am and 12.30am.

At the Gurudwara, they supply you with blankets to urge warm and also provide langar and Tea.
